Throughout the year we made measurable progress on multiple fronts of our Social Responsibility Strategic Framework that centers on four pillars and reflects our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Guiding Principles.

As part of our longer-term strategic planning process with the Assurant Board of Directors in 2020, we prioritized three ESG-related areas of focus — talent, products and climate — as we strive in 2020-2025 to:

- Operate to minimize our carbon footprint and enhance sustainability

Driving Meaningful Change in 2020
- Through the Assurant Cares Employee Support (ACES) COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund, we provided $1.1 million in grants to help eligible employees whose families were experiencing severe financial hardship due to the pandemic.
- As we focused on “Protecting, Connecting, Inspiring,” the Assurant Foundation donated more than $4.7 million in charitable grants and $688,717 in matching gifts, supporting nearly 1,700 charities worldwide in 2020 as we upheld our charitable commitments and embraced virtual volunteering.
- Our 41 Global Engagement Champion Teams conducted “Acts of Giving & Gratitude” to recognize tireless first responders and healthcare workers — as employees rallied to make masks, donate supplies, provide meals, boost spirits and say thank you to front-line heroes worldwide.
- Through our “Go Green” commitment, Assurant reduced known paper consumption by about 52.5 tons as we continue to migrate to more digital applications and processes. We operated six ENERGY STAR-certified buildings and invested in energy-efficient lighting, building controls and HVAC systems. These and other actions to focus on sustainability helped Assurant again earn a “B” on the CDP Climate Survey.
